On January 4, 2014, fifteen hundred Karen people from Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island, and Crete gathered at Lincoln high school. We held our ceremony from 10:00am to 11:30am. Lincoln's Mayor Chris Beutler encouraged Karen people to get an education to work hard and to contribute to Nebraska. Cultural performances included Karen "Doe" dancing, playing the "Klo" drum, and "Kwe" horn. A combined choir from Karen churches, and action songs. We took lunch together and had fellowship. Young people played volleyball, cane ball, and table tennis until 4:00pm. Then Rev. Dr. Saw Khu, board chair of Karen Society of Nebraska, gave prices, thanked everyone who came, and closed by the Karen National Song. We are happy to celebrate Karen New Year event because it is very important to shared our culture to other communities and to pass on to the next generation.
